Jackson Day Mixes Politics, Music

Calling it a “diverse blend of politics and music,” Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Bob Tuke released the agenda for this year’s TNDP Jackson Day celebration, to be held on Saturday, June 24 at the historic Ryman Auditorium, 116 Fifth Avenue North, Nashville. Gates will open at 3:00 p.m. Central. Governor Phil Bredesen will offer the evening’s keynote address. Prior to Bredesen’s speech, the anticipated crowd of over 1,500 Democrats from around the state will be treated to remarks from U.S. Senate candidate Representative Harold Ford, Jr. and a musical performance from Michael McDonald, who fronted the 70’s pop/rock band The Doobie Brothers before launching a successful solo career that has included such hits as “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” and “Yah Mo B There.” Also, Claude McKnight, a member of the a cappella vocal group Take 6, will sing the National Anthem.

“Jackson Day is one of the highlights of the year’s calendar,” Gov. Bredesen said. “It’s a time for Tennessee Democrats to celebrate our accomplishments and refocus our energies toward the hard work ahead of us.”

Ford said he looks forward to sharing his vision for a new generation of leadership in our nation’s capitol.

“Not only will we win in November,” he said. “But we’ll take a new spirit, a new work ethic and a new approach to Washington.”

Tuke noted that the theme of this year’s Jackson Day, Tennessee Democrats: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, emphasizes the important role the party has played in shaping the history of our state and country, going back to the man for whom the event is named, President Andrew Jackson.

“The Tennessee Democratic Party has been central to making Tennessee the great state that it is today, and we’ll continue that work moving forward,” he said. “We’ve also placed a number of key figures on the national stage, and we’ll continue to do that, too.”

Tuke said that tickets sales for Jackson Day have been brisk. He encouraged anyone that has not purchased tickets to so so soon by visiting the the TNDP web site; by visiting the Ticketmaster web site or by calling 615.255.9600; or by visiting the Ryman web site or by calling 615.889.3060. Tickets purchased through Ticketmaster will be charged a handling fee.
