Corker Slammed for Ties to Sundquist, K Street
Apparently, the Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate don’t care what Ron Ramsey thinks. Not two full days after the state Senate majority leader asked the foes to quit picking on each other, Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary launched broadsides against Bob Corker, attacking the former Chattanooga mayor for his close ties to Don Sundquist, the one-time Republican governor that launched an unsuccessful attempt to institute a state income tax, and for his continued fundraising forays on “K Street,” the place that most of the Washington lobbying corps calls home.
The Van Wagon started the fun on Wednesday, firing off a scathing post about Corker’s fundraising activity that begins, “Once again, Bob Corker is in Washington, D.C. with his lobbyist friends.” The piece, which includes a copy of an invitation to a fundraiser Wednesday night for Corker at the Washington lobbying firm Valis and Keelen, is particularly damning for Corker, given his criticism of Bryant’s and Hilleary’s long-running careers as Beltway lobbyist and his attempts to chastise Harold Ford, Jr. for raising money outside of Tennessee.
Blogging for Bryant joined the onslaught Thursday with a short piece about and a link to Broke Cause of Taxes Mountain, a parody of the trailer for the movie Brokeback Mountain that criticizes Corker for his days as commissioner of the Department of Finance and Administration under Sundquist.
Of Corker’s Beltway fundraising, B4B opines, “Corker says one thing, but his actions and his record are the exact opposite.”
The facts indicate that B4B has a point.
