Bredesen Unveils Health Care Plan
Governor Phil Bredesen unveiled his much-anticipated Cover Tennessee initiative as a blueprint for the next step in the future of health care in the Volunteer State. The strategy, which he billed as “affordable, portable health insurance for working families in Tennessee,” has three main components: 1) CoverTN, a partnership between the State and small businesses to help working Tennesseans buy basic health insurance at affordable rates; 2) CoverKids, a plan to provide health insurance to uninsured children; and 3) AccessTN, a plan to offer health insurance to adults who can afford to buy it but who may not be able to obtain it due to pre-existing medical conditions. Early reviews of the voluntary plan signaled strong support. Bredesen said he is discussing options for federal funding with the Bush Administration. In addition to the insurance plans, the Governor announced a new public-health initiative, Project Diabetes, to combat the explosion of diabetes and obesity in Tennessee.
