Corker Takes a Pass on Paying Income Tax
Do you remember what you paid in federal income tax in 1985 and 1989? Bob Corker does. That’s because the multi-millionaire businessman and Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate paid nothing in income tax in either of those years. That’s right: Corker’s income tax returns show he paid nada in at least two tax years. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median household income for Tennessee in 1985 was $29,767. The average middle class family falls into the 15 percent income tax bracket, which means that the average family in Tennessee in 1985 paid almost $4,500 in income tax. Bob Corker, who has made a fortune as a building contractor, didn’t pay a plug nickel. The Census Bureau lists the median household income for Tennessee in 1989 as $33,264. Using the same 15 percent, that means the average Tennessee family in 1989 paid almost $5,000 in income tax. Bob Corker, who has reported earning millions in capital gains annually, didn’t pay a red cent. No one likes paying their income tax, but hard-working Tennessee families do it every year. Bob Corker needs to explain why he gets a pass when the taxman calls.
